Duct Tape - An essential survival item!

Welcome to our ‘Duct Tape – An essential survival item!’ article. Duct tape is an underrated item everyone needs in their bug-out bag!

Most people forget this!

When prepping a bug-out bag, we often focus on food, water, and tools—but here’s one rarely mentioned item that can make all the difference: yep, duct tape.

Why duct tape is a must-have:
1️⃣ Versatile Repairs: Patch holes in tarps, backpacks, or clothing.
2️⃣ Shelter Construction: Reinforce tent seams or create makeshift repairs in the field.
3️⃣ Medical Uses: Secure bandages, splints, or even create an emergency sling.
4️⃣ Survival Hacks: Craft tools, waterproof containers, or even create a fire starter by combining duct tape with tinder.
5️⃣ Compact and Lightweight: Wrap some around a water bottle or flashlight to save space.

Don’t underestimate the power of duct tape—it’s an unsung hero in survival situations. Add it to your kit today!

Blend in!

Get the duct in natural green or brown, if you can. You don’t want a bright silver spot on your tent when you’re keeping a low profile!

What type of Duct tape is best?

Now many will say, hey isn’t duct tape, well, duct tape? Not really. You need the heavy duty duct type with good adhesive backing and easily tearable by hand.

Also get duct which has a good water resistence. Do not buy from a dollar shop, you need the qualities that Industrial type duct tape offers.

Recommended Duct Tape

I recommend the Maartla Heavy Duty Duct Tape or equivalent. Price: Around $9.99

This duct roll has a 3 inch width, its entire usable duct tape is 33 yards in length. It’s perfect for repairs on multi-surfaces. What’s more, there’s a polethylene layer, which is not effected by sun or water, so it’s not going to peel. The tape stretches enough to fit around bends. Lastly you can tear this tape into horizontal strips.

I’d recommend the Welstik Professional Grade Duct Tape too. You can find it too on Amazon for Under $10. The roll is 2 inches wide and 45 yards long. It does come in a 3 inch with 45 yards roll legth too. You can get this tape in an Green Olive-ish color btw. The tape is a bit more shinier than the semi-matt finish of the Maartla Duct, so I’d personally go for the Maartla. The Welstik is Industrial strength, so it’s used in applications that require flame retardant tape and can be wrapped around metal pipes to prevent corrosion, which is handy.

The Welstik duct is stretchable and waterproof and can be applied to various surfaces; even concrete. As I said before, in other words, this is pretty tough tape. It withstands humidity, UV rays and according to its manufacturers, extreme temperatures. It is also resistant to acids and alkalis.

I know duct tape isnt the most riveting of essential survival gear lol, but it sure will save those leaky tents and rapidly fasten loose or torn clothing, rucksacks/backpacks, bags and any other emergencies you can imagine! With that said it’s a must have in your bug out bag!
